So, if you know me personally then you know that I have a tendency to randomly start singing songs like "Popular", "Defying Gravity", and "Dancing through Life" whenever the moment feels right. All these songs are from the popular Broadway musical, Wicked. Wicked is a Broadway play based on a book written by Gregory Maguire and focuses on Elphaba's story before she became the wicked witch of the west that we all know in the Wizard of Oz.
I have been singing these songs for YEARS. I was introduced to them back in college when one of my roommates, JoAnna (who had seen it), was playing it over and over again. Well, those are some mighty catchy songs and the story displayed through them had me totally enchanted after listening to the soundtrack only once. After I became obsessed with the songs I wanted to know where I could see the "movie". There is not one. Oh. Well, where can I see the play? Pretty much exclusively New York at that time. As a broke college student living off of ramen, hopes, and dreams, that seemed to be an unlikely trip in my near future. I was discouraged by this news when JoAnna mentioned that there was a book. A book?! Well, why didn't you SAY so? I love to read! Especially when it is a good story and based on the songs from the musical I surly could not be disappointed on that end. Not to mention, the book is almost ALWAYS better than the movie/musical, right?
I immediately sought out the library closest to me with a copy. As soon as I got my hands on the book I did what I always do and took off to the bathtub to relax and zone in to an adventure in the glorious land of Oz.
The book was awful. In fact, it earned itself a spot as the third worst book I have ever read. The writing was fine but the book itself was dark, slow, boring, and made you hate almost every single character. I did not get any of the uplifting fun and humor that I had heard in the songs in this book. Then I found out that the book and the play are completely different. They have a few of the same characters and settings but the tone and personality of the whole story is different. Thank goodness!
Here I am almost eight years later still singing these wonderful songs and listening to others rave about how awesome the musical is and I still have not laid eyes on it. All that is about to change!
Last week I noticed billboard up that said "Wicked Musical" and I was like...here?! In St. Louis!? As soon as I got home I took care of my little one (apple slices and My Little Pony were her hearts desire) and looked up the Fox (a theater here). There it was! WICKED! Here! In the same town as me! I immediately messaged my husband (poor thing has had to listen to me talk about this musical I have never seen for years) and told him about it. He wanted to know what every husband wants to know..."what is this going to cost?" Well, ladies and gents the tickets are not cheap, but sometimes money can buy a bit of happiness. My husband even went beyond what I was expecting and bought the best seats you can get! Needless to say, I am super excited. December 13th now seems like an ETERNITY away. Until then though, I will keep listening to all of the songs I love and continue waiting for Wicked.
